Introduction of the Dabchicks Sailing Club Coxswains course

Published 00:00 on 14 Jan 2022

Winter Training for our Volunteers.

Over the winter months the DSC has developed a skill pathway for the benefit of our volunteers and its free.

The Pathway is not intended to be just about steering and recovering boats, although as the syllabus shows some hours will be directed towards it. It is about gaining knowledge and standardising the process to support club sailors and club events. As an example, we are not asking volunteers to write Risk Assessments, we would be showing their existence and advising who is responsible for completing one and when.

The Pathway is not intended to replace RYA Powerboat 2 or RYA Safety Boat courses, they are National standards. They do not cover either individually or combined the full syllabus of the "Coxswains course"

It is also not intended for someone to do the whole pathway in one year or one sitting. Like learning to sail each module will be presented regularly and repeat attendance will be fine. We would hope to run the shore-based training during the winter in February, keeping the sessions to a maximum of three hours but more likely two hours. The on the water sessions (OTW) will be at weekends in sessions using the club boats and dinghies. These we will try and organise before Sunset series begins. As a rule, sailors are the best people to rescue sailors, their understanding of the boats and rigs is usually the best place to start.
